School Description

Our Mission More than just teaching the joy of movement and an appreciation of dance, our mission is to produce young adults who are leaders with personal life tools, a sense of conviction, and an appreciation of what can be accomplished through hard work and determination- a clear advantage to becoming successful adults. Along with ballet, students are invited to take contemporary, musical theatre, jazz, irish, hip hop, lyrical jazz, street jazz and tap. Classes in these types of dance greatly improves their ballet training in all aspects. Douglas Ballet offers classes for everyone, at every level, from two years of age to adult. Students have performance opportunities, the ability to compete in festivals throughout the Lower Mainland and North America, and persue the Royal Academy of Dance examinable ballet curriculum. Examinable Ballet through the Royal Academy of Dance The examinable ballet curriculum taught at Douglas Ballet follows the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) method. Established in 1935, the Royal Academy is an international organization of graded ballet syllabi designed to meet the needs of young people of all ages who would like to study classical ballet. BC High School Credits The BC Government has decided that students will get high school credits in Grade 11 and 12 for passing Royal Academy Ballet Vocational Exams. Ask the studio for more information. The Students and the School Positive relations between the students at Douglas Ballet are very important. With this in mind, the Student Council was formed as a medium in which social events are planned and the students are given the opportunity to help improve the school. The family atmosphere at Douglas Ballet lets students grow in a nurturing environment, while allowing them the opportunity to become professional, well-rounded dancers. Performing and the DBA Performance Division Dedicated Douglas Ballet dancers have had performance opportunities throughout the community and the world including Spain, Alaska, Disneyland, New York City, as well as in local competitions and festivals. At the end of each dance year in June, the entire school works towards the goal of a unique full-length production at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby.
