MacSailing is the sailing school at the Jericho Sailing Center in Vancouver. We offer introductory sailing lessons for children and adults. Our goal is to offer a complete sailing experience based on excellent instruction and a safe environment, utilizing equipment appropriate for all ages in a fun and dynamic atmosphere. All of our coaches are Sail Canada (or equivalent) certified with water safety and first-aid training.

BEACH KIDS AGES 6-7 |
Beach Kids is a program for young children 6-7 years of age who want to learn about sailing, canoeing, and water safety. The program focuses on teamwork in an inclusive setting and features beach and water activities behind the break wall at Jericho. Kids start by sailing with the coaches to learn the basics of sailing and paddling. Once they are comfortable and confident being in a boat on the water they venture farther out depending on the wind and weather.

SAIL OPTIS AGES 7-10

The course is designed to introduce participants to the basics of sailing while maintaining a fun and safe atmosphere. In level 1, students share a boat with another student and can expect to learn the parts of the boat, how to rig and de-rig the boats, capsize recovery, how to tack (turn), knot tying, capsize recovery, sailing in a group and how to understand wind direction. Level 2 is a continuation of Level 1, however, students can now sail by themselves. In Level 2 students are introduced to the different points of sail and the basic rules of the road. They will be taught how to sail in stronger winds and waves along with proper seamanship.

SAIL ESCAPES AGES 10-14

These courses are for beginner & intermediate sailors aged 10-14 years old. In Level 1, students share a boat with another student and can expect to learn how to rig and de-rig the boats, sail in a group with coach boats around, how to tack (turn) and how to perform capsize recovery. They will also learn how to tie knots, the parts of the boat and understand the wind direction. Level 2 is a continuation of Level 1, however, students can now sail by themselves. In Level 2 students are introduced to the different points of sail and the basic rules of the road. They will be taught how to sail in stronger winds and waves along with proper seamanship.

CANSAIL PROGRAM AGES 11-16
|
The CANSail programs are more rigorous and internationally recognized. We recommend that younger students take at least one sailing camp before entering the CANSail program. In CANSail 1 you can expect to learn sailing terminology, points of sail in a boat with two sails, tacking, gybing, safety, righting a capsized boat and knot tying. In CANSail 2 you will develop your sailing techniques while learning about sail controls, local geography and weather and right of way rules. Upon completion of CANSail 2, you will be able to confidently skipper your own small sailboat. In CANSail 3 you will learn advanced boat handling. This includes how to accelerate and slow down efficiently, roll tacks, roll gybes, rudderless sailing, and backward sailing. CANSail 4 is an introduction to racing where you will fine-tune skills learned in previous classes and apply them to the racecourse. The program also incorporates basic racing rules, tactics, and strategy. |

JUNIOR CRUISER AGES 12-16 |
This course offers teenagers an introduction to cruising on our Martin 242s. The curriculum includes sailing, trip planning, safety, weather, docking, anchoring, man overboard and local navigation. The goal for this course is to give students a basic understanding of cruising and the elements involved. Upon completion, students will be worthy deckhands for local cruising expeditions. CANSail 1 or equivalent is a prerequisite. |

MARINE ECO ADVENTURES AGES 8-14 |
This camp is a program for kids who want to learn about marine ecology by participating in activities on and near the ocean. The Marine Eco Camp looks at the environment from Spanish Banks to Kits Beach. It helps kids understand the history of the area and the geography and evolution of the foreshore. The program is interactive and includes classroom sessions, beach activities and on-water exercises close to shore. Each week will include a nature walk, shoreline cleanup, water sampling, weather forecasting, and a guest speaker. |

INTRO TO CANOEING |
The Introductory Canoe program is designed to introduce participants to canoeing in a group setting. The program emphasizes learning boat control so that paddlers will gain the confidence, skills, and knowledge to be safe and have fun. The program starts with the knowledge and skills necessary for “beachfront” paddling activities. It progresses to introduce the novice paddler to paddling with a partner and to introduce basic land and water rescue techniques. |

JERICHO WATERSPORTS COMBO AGES 8-10 & 10-14
|
Features: Sailing, Canoeing, Beach Soccer, and other fun activities.
The program will provide kids with an introduction to a number of water sports and activities on a full day course. The program encourages kids to collaborate with friends in a series of activities so that they become confident and comfortable participating in many of the water-based sports and activities available in Vancouver. The on-water schedule is flexible and activities will be scheduled when the weather is most suitable.

In conjunction with other schools (Windsure & Ecomarine) at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Participants pick one of our week-long half-day programs in combination with either skimboarding, windsurfing or kayaking for the other half of the day. In order to register for these programs, we have to coordinate with the other schools to check availability and scheduling. |
